Upton Sinclair, on Les Misérables:

So long as there shall exist, by reason of law and custom, a social condemnation, which, in the face of civilization, artificially creates hells on earth, and complicates a destiny that is divine, with human fatality; so long as the three problems of the age—the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of women by starvation, and the dwarfing of childhood by physical and spiritual night—are not solved; so long as, in certain regions, social asphyxia shall be possible; in other words, and from a yet more extended point of view, so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this cannot be useless.

In other news, has anyone else read The Painted Man and The Desert Spear by Peter V. Brett? I can't remember the last time I loved a first book so much, or the last time I was so bitterly disappointed by a sequel.

21st-Jan-2010 07:19 pm - Peter Wimsey and Superior
from Unnatural Death by Dorothy Sayers, pub. 1927:

"Well now, as to the medical problem—the means. I must say that up to now that appears completely insoluble. I am baffled, Watson (said he, his hawk-like eyes gleaming angrily from under the half-closed lids). Even I am baffled. But not for long! (he cried, with a magnificent burst of self-confidence). My Honour (capital H) is concerned to track this Human Fiend (capitals) to its hidden source, and nail the whited sepulchre to the mast even though it crush me in the attempt! Loud applause. His chin sank broodingly upon his dressing-gown, and he breathed a few guttural notes into the bass saxophone which was the cherished companion of his solitary hours in the bathroom."

Parker ostentatiously took up the book which he had laid aside on Wimsey's entrance.

"Tell me when you've finished," he said, caustically.

--

I LOVE THESE BOOKS. Holy crap, everything Peter Wimsey says is ridiculously hilarious. He's rivalling Poirot for my affections and that I think might get me kicked out of Turn-of-the-Century Dashing Detective Appreciation Society. (TotCDDAS. We have meetings.) And that sucks, because I'm pretty sure people who are thrown out ignominiously have to watch the ceremonial shredding of their TotCDDAS membership certificate. And Dr. Watson probably looks on disapprovingly from the 221B Baker Street in the sky, slowly shaking his head and shaming you with his gentle disappointment.

ANOTHER THING: Everyone should go read the manga Superior. I read it yesterday, and frankly, I'm kind of in love. It basically instantly became one of my favorites after Bleach, and the characters are awesome. The hero's a little typically heroic, but the leading lady, Sheila, is just hilarious.

The summary: The demon queen who subdued enormous and powerful monsters also slaughtered over half of the world population. Surviving members of the human race elected a hero to slay the demon queen, searching for release from her oppressive rule. His name is Exa the Hero. However, he questions his mission to eradicate the monsters for they too are alive, and he anguishes over that fact. Sheila the Demon Queen became interested in his principles and joined his journey, hiding her identity. Eventually, she realizes that she fell in love with the hero and hence their journey begins...

Also, apparently this is classified as shoujo, but you couldn't tell it from reading it. Seriously, the author has impeccable comedic timing, the art is luxuriously gorgeous, and the characters are strong. The first arc of 27 volumes is complete; a new arc just started under the title Superior Cross, but it hasn't been translated yet. But the first arc's done, and COME ON. IT'S SITTING THERE, BEGGING TO BE READ. AND ADORED.

and if anyone on my flist has already read it...............wanna--wanna talk about it

I GOT INTO CHAMBER CHOIR.

And then he locked the doors at 2:01 and turned three late people away, one of whom was a teacher's pet my first two years in choir and could do no wrong. I WAS SHOCKED

See, this choir is run the way I always envisioned a choir should be run, and now that I'm experiencing it, I'm kinda dreading it tbh. Aside from the door-locking thing, we sightread a brand-new piece today and when the tenors missed this one part a third time (the first three times when they sing this motif, it's a jump of a third; the last time it's a jump of a fifth), he pretty much blew up at them, saying that the choir's standard was raised too high to allow this kind of laziness and if he could find out who was missing the fifth, he'd throw them out of the room.

Keeping in mind this was the same guy who, freshman year, told us to "show up for rehearsal when you can," I--I was a little startled. BUT ANYWAY, now i have a class on TR so i get no days off a week :c

THEN I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] hikari_cyhan OH SORRY [livejournal.com profile] spellcoats about Fire and Hemlock and it led to me agreeing to read the Dalemark Quartet, which I found online but then as I was torrenting, somehow ended up torrenting backwards? I DON'T EVEN KNOW. It was like, "hello i will torrent along happily one two three four five percent! OH. WAIT. YOU'RE AT A COLLEGE, AREN'T YOU. NO TORRENTS FOR YOU. SLUUUUUUUUUUURP BACK TO ZERO."

So I was complaining to my friend Dustin about it since he torrents stuff pretty frequently, and he had a pretty novel suggestion.
quark: trying to torrent some ebooks
dizzayD: cool
quark: and auburn's blocked my listen port
quark: right now i'm completing in 99:99:99 hours
dizzayD: jebus
dizzayD: what books?
quark: diana wynne jones's stuff
quark: which is like twenty books
quark: and eoin colfer's artemis fowl series
dizzayD: ok get this
dizzayD: theres this thing
quark: which is five books
dizzayD: called a library
dizzayD: and its across the street from you
dizzayD: shocking, i know

Eheheh. W-whoops.

EXCEPT! When I went to the library (which is one of the largest college libraries in the country), I got lost. This helpful sign told me so!

And then I found glorious books! that I will post about later, because when I went to check out, my card was too old and beat-up from swiping door locks for three years to be read by the scanner, so I have to go to the student union and get a new one made tomorrow and MY READING IS DELAYED FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS! >:(

>:(

but other than that i'm good
